New Publication: Engaging Affected Populations in Health Equity: An Emerging Framework in Colorado

The Colorado Trust is pleased to share its latest evaluation report, Engaging Affected Populations in Health Equity: An Emerging Framework in Colorado. The report summarizes key lessons learned from the Health Equity Advocacy Strategy (HEAS), a multi-phase, multi-year effort aimed at building a strong, effective field of health equity advocates statewide. It was written by Rachel Estrella, PhD and Traci Endo Inouye of Social Policy Research Associates, the research and evaluation firm for the HEAS.

Now Available: 2015 Health Equity Learning Series Highlights Report and additional resources

“We are pleased to provide our newest publication, summarizing learnings from the three Health Equity Learning Series (HELS) events held last year. Written for The Trust by Carie Sherman, Creating Paths to Opportunity: Advancing Health Equity by Understanding Structures and Organizing for Power is intended to augment the recorded presentations and accompanying materials, all of which are available on our website.

The report examines topics covered by our four presenters in 2015, including how structures, policies and systems can unintentionally marginalize vulnerable communities; how race impacts health; and how organizations have effectively used resources to give community members a voice, and improved the health of their own communities.

The Colorado Trust Offers New Health Equity Funding Opportunity

“The Colorado Trust is pleased to announce a new funding opportunity to help expand and advance innovative ideas in health equity advocacy.

We believe that supporting policy change through advocacy efforts is an essential strategy to address health inequities and social challenges. We know that certain groups consistently experience greater challenges to accessing quality health coverage and care, and suffer poorer health outcomes than other groups. We know that health is more than health care, that it is deeply affected by social, systemic and institutional dynamics that extend beyond health coverage and care. We also know that effective, efficient and inclusive advocacy and public engagement efforts can lead to positive changes in those dynamics, and in turn help support individuals and families who are most vulnerable.

The first phase of this new funding will begin this spring. The Trust anticipates selecting approximately 30 grantees to receive up to $40,000 for a six-month grant period. 2013 Colorado Health Access Survey Data Released November 5th

“The 2013 Colorado Health Access Survey was released November 5th.  The Colorado Health Access Survey – the CHAS – is the premier source of information on health insurance coverage, access to health care and how health care is used in Colorado. Findings from the 2013 CHAS give a detailed picture of Colorado’s changing health landscape. The data will serve another important function as well – providing a baseline of information to help measure the impact of the Affordable Care Act in Colorado. CHAS data will show how many additional Coloradans obtain health insurance, whether it is affordable and whether having health insurance translates into better access to health care.

High-level findings from the 2013 CHAS:

• 741,000 Coloradoans – one of seven residents – does not have health insurance.
• Hispanic Coloradans are disproportionately uninsured. Approximately 26 percent of the population identifies as Hispanic, but 38.6 percent of the uninsured are Hispanic. (See graph below.)
• Nearly 8 percent of Coloradans said they needed mental health services or counseling services in the 12 months before the survey, but did not get them, with the most frequently cited reasons relating to cost.
• More than one of four young adults between the ages of 19 and 26 do not have health insurance, the highest rate among all age groups.

Health Equity Learning Series Luncheon

The next Health Equity Learning Series Lunch, Health equity and the Social Determinants of Health, will take place Thursday, July 25th, 2013.

The speaker will be Adewale Troutman, MD, Director, Public Health Practice Program, University of South Florida and President, American Public Health Association.  For more than 40 years, Dr. Troutman has studied and worked to advance health equity and to eliminate racism and other social injustices.  Founder of the nation's first Center for Health Equity at Metro Louisville Department of Public Health and Wellness, Dr. Troutman is featured in the documentary, Unnatural Causes:  Is Inequality Making Us Sick?  Please plan to attend and hear Dr. Troutman's insights about how social determinants of health - where people live, learn, work and play - affect health, and what we can do to address these factors.
