New Publication: Engaging Affected Populations in Health Equity: An Emerging Framework in Colorado

The Colorado Trust is pleased to share its latest evaluation report, Engaging Affected Populations in Health Equity: An Emerging Framework in Colorado. The report summarizes key lessons learned from the Health Equity Advocacy Strategy (HEAS), a multi-phase, multi-year effort aimed at building a strong, effective field of health equity advocates statewide. It was written by Rachel Estrella, PhD and Traci Endo Inouye of Social Policy Research Associates, the research and evaluation firm for the HEAS.

Now Available: 2015 Health Equity Learning Series Highlights Report and additional resources

“We are pleased to provide our newest publication, summarizing learnings from the three Health Equity Learning Series (HELS) events held last year. Written for The Trust by Carie Sherman, Creating Paths to Opportunity: Advancing Health Equity by Understanding Structures and Organizing for Power is intended to augment the recorded presentations and accompanying materials, all of which are available on our website.

The report examines topics covered by our four presenters in 2015, including how structures, policies and systems can unintentionally marginalize vulnerable communities; how race impacts health; and how organizations have effectively used resources to give community members a voice, and improved the health of their own communities.

Colorado Health Equity Commission Members Named

Fifteen members have been named to the state’s new Health Equity Commission. As set forth in HB13-1088, the commission replaces the Minority Health Advisory Commission. The commission advises the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment through its Office of Health Equity on data collection and dissemination strategies, aligning the department’s health equity efforts, strengthening collaborative partnerships with communities and promoting workforce diversity.

The following commission members were appointed by Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s executive director: Chris Armijo (Denver), Karen Koenemann (Leadville), Leonardo Kattari (Denver), Linda Burhansstipanov (Pine), Maisha Fields-Pollard (Centennial), Mayra Rosa (Denver), Melanie Tran (Lakewood), Nita Mosby Henry (Denver), Suzuho Shimasaki (Denver) and Tony Hernandez (Denver). 

Sen. Jessie Ulibarri (Commerce City) was appointed by the president of the Senate and Rep. John Buckner (Aurora) was appointed by the speaker of the House. Dr. Judy Zerzan will serve as the designee for the Department of Health Care Policy and Financing, and Paul Stein will serve as the designee from the Department of Human Services. Karin McGowan will serve as ex officio member of the commission for the Department of Public Health and Environment.

Although Colorado ranks as one of the healthiest states, gaps in health persist. Some communities bear a disproportionate burden of disease, illness and, consequently, a poor quality of life. The Office of Health Equity is working closely with the Health Equity Commission to explore possible public health system changes to give every Coloradan an equal chance to be healthy.  [Source:  COPrevent]

Health Equity Learning Series Luncheon

The next Health Equity Learning Series Lunch, Health equity and the Social Determinants of Health, will take place Thursday, July 25th, 2013.

The speaker will be Adewale Troutman, MD, Director, Public Health Practice Program, University of South Florida and President, American Public Health Association.  For more than 40 years, Dr. Troutman has studied and worked to advance health equity and to eliminate racism and other social injustices.  Founder of the nation's first Center for Health Equity at Metro Louisville Department of Public Health and Wellness, Dr. Troutman is featured in the documentary, Unnatural Causes:  Is Inequality Making Us Sick?  Please plan to attend and hear Dr. Troutman's insights about how social determinants of health - where people live, learn, work and play - affect health, and what we can do to address these factors.
