National Diabetes Month: New Tools to Help Providers and Patients
“November is National Diabetes Month, a time dedicated to spreading awareness about diabetes and the countless people impacted by it. The American Diabetes Association has partnered with the American Association of Diabetes Educators and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to publish a joint position statement about the importance of self-management, education, and support for patients living with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.
The National Diabetes Education Program is also promoting new tools for providers. They’ve highlighted 10 guiding principles designed to help providers deliver high-quality care to patients with or at risk for diabetes. For more information and resources for people with diabetes, family and caregivers, health care professionals, and the community, visit NDEP’s website here.
Colorado has also been greatly impacted by type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. Nearly half a million Coloradans suffer from the disease, and more than 1 in 3 Coloradans has prediabetes. The Diabetes Prevention Program is aimed at providing those Coloradans with the education and support they need to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes. Click here to learn more about the DPP in Colorado. For a list of CDC-recognized DPP programs in Colorado, click here.” [Source: COPrevent]

Latinas with prediabetes may benefit from promotora-led Diabetes Prevention Program
“In a Latina population at high risk for type 2 diabetes, a Promotora-Led Diabetes Prevention Program delivered by lay community health workers, or promotoras, was feasible, acceptable and effective, according to study findings published in The Diabetes Educator. Each Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) session was led by a promotora in Spanish, and the primary outcome was weight change over the 12-month study period.
During the study period, participants achieved an average 5.6% reduction in body weight, with 42% achieving the 7% weight-loss goal and 58% achieving at least the 5% weight-loss goal. By 12 months, 30% of participants reverted to normoglycemia. The researchers also found that there were significant pre- and post-intervention reductions for waist circumference, diastolic blood pressure, LDL cholesterol and insulin levels. Perceived stress, anxiety and depression mean scores all decreased during the study period.
“The findings reported here suggest that delivery of the DPP by promotoras represents a promising approach for diabetes prevention in socioeconomically disadvantaged Latinas, a particularly high-risk population,” the researchers wrote. In Colorado, there are several organizations that offer the DPP in Spanish. To locate a Spanish DPP program in Colorado, call 1-800 DIABETES. Employers play an important role in diabetes prevention
“Over 86 million US adults- more than 1 in 3 - have prediabetes. A person with prediabetes has a blood sugar level higher than normal, but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. Without lifestyle changes to improve their health, 15% to 30% of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within five years.
Employers play an important role in the prevention of type 2 diabetes by offering the Diabetes Prevention Program as a covered health benefit to their employees. To promote prediabetes awareness and help prevent type 2 diabetes, employers can:

Lifestyle Change programs for individuals with diabetes and prediabetes are cost effective
“The average medical expenditures among people diagnosed with diabetes were 2.3 times higher than people without diabetes, according to the 2014 National Diabetes Statistics Report.
A recent study conducted at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center found that participants who were assigned to an intensive lifestyle change program focused on diet and exercise experienced statistically significant average savings compared to individuals assigned to a standard diabetes support program. Financial savings stemmed from fewer hospitalizations, shorter hospital stays, and a reduction in prescription medication usage.
The Community Preventive Services Task Force released an evidence-based recommendation in favor of programs that actively encourage those at increased risk for type 2 diabetes to eat healthier and be more physically active. The Task Force also concluded from the economic evidence that combined diet and physical activity promotion programs to prevent type 2 diabetes among people at increased risk are cost-effective.
The CDC-led lifestyle change program is the National Diabetes Prevention Program. Currently in Colorado there are over 20 recognized programs. For more information on the Diabetes Prevention Program in Colorado, please visit our informational website.” [Source: COPrevent]

CDPHE & CBS4 Prediabetes Spanish Language Campaign
“One in three U.S. adults has prediabetes; most are unaware they are at risk. CBS4 is continuing its prediabetes campaign to raise awareness through May 2014. The campaign is designed to educate consumers about risk factors that lead to type 2 diabetes and drive enrollment into the Diabetes Prevention Program.
The campaign is targeting Spanish speaking consumers in Denver. CBS4 has partnered with Entravision (Univision TV, KPXk and KJMN Radio) to produce Spanish language television and radio spots. Spanish speaking consumers are directed to a custom website, which provides educational information on prediabetes risk factors, and encourages a call to 1-800 Diabetes to learn more. CBS Outdoor assets at bus shelters, outdoor benches and billboards further extend the campaign reach and can be seen around the Denver metro in various locations. To learn more about the Diabetes Prevention Program in Colorado, please visit our home page.” [Source: COPrevent]
