Colorado Colorectal Screening Program – progress and updates

Although colon cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer-related death, the Colorado Colorectal Screening Program (CCSP) is helping to reduce incidence and mortality rates in Colorado by 3-4% per year. Thank you to the participating ClinicNET affiliate clinics for the important part you have played in assuring medically underserved Coloradans received screening, treatment, and navigation support as part of those efforts over the past 10 years. The Program has been able to provide colonoscopies to about 18,000 people, preventing about 575 colorectal cancers, and helping to diagnose and treat about 150 cancers.

The Program’s current 3 year contract with CDPHE ends June 30, 2015. The new award includes funding for patient navigation and training, but does not cover direct medical services for colonoscopies or cancer treatment. Clinics under contact with the Program have been notified.

Revised CRC Screening Guidelines for CCSP

“The Medical Quality Assurance Committee (MQAC) for the Colorado Colorectal Screening Program met on May 19, 2014 and approved revised CRC screening guidelines for the Program. A copy of the revised guidelines can be found here. The guidelines are consistent with the USPSTF guidelines for colorectal cancer screening. The changes from the previous guidelines have been highlighted. Motivational Interviewing 2-Day Training Opportunity

“The Colorado Colorectal Screening Program (CCSP) is excited to offer ClinicNET affiliate clinics a 2-day onsite Motivational Interviewing (MI) Training for patient navigators. Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based approach that seeks to strengthen an individual’s motivation and commitment to change.

The training will be May 28th, 12:00-5:00pm and May 29th 8:00am-3:00pm at Anschutz Medical Campus | Education 2 South, Room 2305 | 13121 East 17th Avenue | Aurora, CO 80045. Please RSVP to Tashia, latashia.warren@ucdenver.edu (attendee name and clinic) to confirm your attendance. CCSP will be able to offer travel/lodging reimbursement for training participants from CCSP participating clinics traveling from outside the Denver Metro Area. Colorado Colorectal Screening Program requests input on Fiscal Year 2013 grant award

Dear Partners,

The Colorado Colorectal Screening Program will be hosting a series of teleconferences to provide updates and receive your input regarding the Fiscal Year 2013 grant award. Below you will find the funding announcement letter with details about our grant award that was sent out last week. We would like to invite our clinic partners to participate in a general teleconference with us as an opportunity for you to share your thoughts regarding the direction of the Program for the upcoming fiscal year.  Please extend this invitation as you see fit.

The call-in line will be open for all three of the following dates and times:  

• Wednesday, September 5th at 7 AM
• Thursday, September 6th at 4 PM
• Wednesday, September 12th  at Noon

Message from CO Colorectal Screening Program

"Dear Partners,

It is with great pleasure that we can send this note to you announcing that the Colorado Colorectal Screening Program has successfully competed for funding for a three year grant that allows us to substantially restore activities of the Program. We have received a 2.86 million dollar award for 9 months, starting October 2012 to support endoscopic screening, including some treatment and navigation support, as well as, additional activities in systems change to support the use of high sensitivity fecal occult blood testing (FOBT) for colorectal cancer screening, and to start improving our partnerships with other chronic disease prevention programs.

Contingent on the state budget, we will receive $3.82 million in each of the following two years.  While this doesn't meet our previous funding levels, it is a step in the right direction to provide this important cancer screening for medically underserved Coloradans. Please share the good news with your screening and treatment providers!

The Program will holding a series of conference calls in early September with the details about the grant and will be contacting clinics directly regarding the allocations of screens and participation in FOBT systems changes. The Program will be contacting you and your service partners in the next few weeks to execute new memorandums of understanding for this Fiscal Year 2013 grant. We plan to make these contracts for the 3 year grant period from October 1, 2012 to June 30, 2015.
