August 29th Webinar: Connecting Two Worlds – States Integrating Primary & Behavioral Health Care

“The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) is pleased to announce a new webinar, Connecting the Two Worlds: States Integrating Primary and Behavioral Health Care," on August 29, 2013, from 12:30-2:00 pm (EDT).

As states pursue payment and delivery reform to yield a more integrated delivery system, stronger connections between primary and behavioral health care are essential. This webinar will explore challenges and opportunities to building linkages and care models that meet the needs of patients with physical and behavioral health care needs. It will also examine strategies for blending disparate funding streams from different payers and exchanging data needed to support care coordination and working relationships between varied providers. The webinar will feature the experiences of Washington state, Minnesota, and an innovative community mental health center that is leveraging a Health Care Innovation award from the CMS Innovation Center to integrate care. New Report: Including Safety-Net Providers in Integrated Delivery Systems: Issues and Options for Policymakers

"Health care reform has spurred efforts to develop integrated delivery systems that may be particularly beneficial to patients who face barriers to accessing care or have multiple health conditions. But it remains to be seen how safety net providers, including community health centers and public hospitals, will be included in integrated delivery systems. Promoting Integrated Care in the Colorado Health Care System Part II

"House Bill (H.B.) 11-1242 of the First Regular Session of the 68th General Assembly was passed in 2011, creating Section 25.5-4-418 of the Colorado Revised Statutes, which requires the Colorado State Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (the Department) to report on state and federal laws affecting the integrated delivery of physical and behavioral health care, as well as barriers and incentives to delivering integrated care.

The importance of integrated care, which “addresses the mental health, including substance use disorder, oral health, and physical health needs of the patient at the time of health care services,” has been acknowledged and declared by the State of Colorado via H.B. 11-1242. The purpose of this report is to determine why fully integrated care is not yet achieved by examining the perspectives of those who provide the care and implement the system: health care providers, representatives from provider associations and managed care groups, and state agency representatives..."
