Delta Dental: $200,000 available for innovative ideas!

The Delta Dental of Colorado Innovation Grants program is accepting proposals of $5,000 to $50,000. A total of $200,000 in grant awards will be issued. Any Colorado-based organization or individual with an innovative approach to improve oral health should apply bySeptember 1st.

"This is an exciting opportunity for anyone with the next big idea for advancing the oral health of our state, whether you are a dentist, entrepreneur, in public health or education, or perhaps a student," said Barbara Springer, executive director of the Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation.

Grant proposals must:

1. Originate in Colorado - No out-of-state applications.
2. Demonstrate innovation - We want new, untested, cutting edge ideas.
3. Be impactful - Funded ideas will truly advance the field of oral health in Colorado.

• Significantly improve the quality of oral health care.
• Develop and test new oral health technologies.
• Increase oral health literacy.
• Increase dental practice efficiencies.
• Connect and integrate oral health and overall health.
• Increase focus on prevention and/or early intervention.

Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation will award up to $200,000 to implement innovation grants. Grant awards will range from $5,000 to $50,000. Projects can take up to 18 months to complete.

Originate in Colorado – Out-of-state applications will not be accepted.
Demonstrate innovation – New, untested, cutting edge ideas.
Be impactful – Funded ideas will advance the field of oral health in a meaningful way.

Applications will not be considered that are solely for equipment, capital funding, marketing campaigns (e.g., brochures, videos, etc.) and sustaining ongoing programs.

Delta Dental Request for Applications: Oral Health Mini-Grant Project

“Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood condition and yet preventable. By supporting projects that increase access to care and address the causes of the disease and impacting systems, the Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation has a unique approach to fighting childhood cavities. Now, we're looking for creative partners to join us on our journey.

Our statewide request for applications (RFA) has been issued to fund projects working to improve children's oral health in local settings. Approximately $100,000 in funding is available through this RFA, with awards ranging from $1,000 - $15,000 per grant.

We are looking for non-profit organizations and individuals who aim to improve children's oral health in Colorado. Applications may include requests for funding projects that take up to one year to complete. Funding is also available for a one time use. Applications are due June 12, 2015.

The Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation has funds available for children on CHP+ who exceed their $600 max and for those insured by Delta Dental of Colorado who need help with their co-payments.

The plans are only available to current Delta Dental subscribers who need assistance with co-payments or CHP+ members who have exceeded their annual maximum. Individuals covered under another carrier's dental plan do not qualify for this coverage.")

Oral Health Issue Brief

Governor John Hickenlooper recently made children’s oral health one of Colorado's 10 winnable battles over the next five years. This is an important goal because oral disease can negatively impact a child’s performance in school, speech development, nutrition, self-esteem and sleep.

To help inform this winnable battle, three foundations – The Colorado Trust, Caring for Colorado Foundation and the Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation – jointly issued a new brief, Improving the Oral Health of Colorado's Children. Written by Diane Brunson, RDH, MPH, Director of Public Health, University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine, the brief details:

• the causes of oral disease,
• multiple prevention strategies,
• significant challenges in access to oral health care, and
• strategies for improving the oral health of Colorado children.

In addition to the brief, a two-page Executive Summary provides a high-level overview for policymakers.
